Road trips around Lesotho
Most routes mentioned in this website are accessible with a normal two-wheel drive vehicle (though road conditions deteriorate rapidly after heavy rains - enquire locally).
The exceptions are:
- The Sani Pass is only open to four-wheel drive vehicles if you're going up (you won't be let through the South African border with two wheel drive). Going down in a two-wheel vehicle is possible but not recommended. Though do note the following: the road between Sani Top and Mokhotlong is negotiable in a normal vehicle although rough in places.
- Oxbow-Mokhotlong road is now full tar though ice can be a problem in winter.
- Makunyapane to Sehonghong road down the Senqu valley is 4WD only.
- Qachas Nek to Sehonghong road shown on most maps no longer exists.
- Sehonghong-Sehlabathebe road over the Matabeng Pass is appalling - 4WD only.
- Sehlabathebe Park Lodge can be reached by normal vehicle from Matatiele (via Ramatseliso's Gate) and from Qachas Nek.
- Quthing-Qachas Nek road is rough in places, but negotiable by normal vehicle.
- Mokhotlong-Thaba Tseka road is accessible to normal vehicles.
If you do have a 4x4, you can travel deep into the heart of this exquisite country.
