Sani Top Chalet

High on the Drakensberg escarpment on the border between South Africa and Lesotho, Sani Top Chalet offers comfortable accommodation beneath a sea of stars at night and breathtaking landscapes by day. One of South Africa's best kept secret places, a small rustic establishment that boasts the highest pub in Africa at 2874m above sea level. It is located high on the Drakensberg escarpment on the border between South Africa and Lesotho.

Passports required. Border post times 8am-4pm.

Sani Top is one of the few beautiful places in the Drakensberg Mountains where you can get to by vehicle (via the Sani Pass - 4x4 vehicles only). Sani Top is the highest part of the Drakensberg that can be reached with a vehicle.

Today Sani Top is a tourist attraction which includes a Basuto Culteral Village and some spectacular views.

• Hike up Thabana Ntlenyana the highest point south of Kilimanjaro is 12kms from Sani Top.

The "First Chair" at Black Mountain, Sani Top is a 300m or so ski run which is interrupted by the road. This is the most accessible of the runs. For the adventurous skier or snow boarder a good oppurtunity presents itself in winter when Sani Top is covered in powdery snow. In Winter there are adventurous skiing opportunities although snow is never guaranteed.

Executive Rondavel - Cosy garden rondavel with en suite bathroom, double bed and fire place.

Standard Rondavel - Rondavel located outside main building. Two single beds, shared ablutions. Gas heater, linen and towels provided.

Standard Room - Family room in main building - two single beds and one bunk, shared ablutions. Gas heater, linen and towels provided.

Backpackers

Backpackers 1 - One bunk bed - sheet, pillow and one blanket provided.

Backpackers 2 - Two single beds - sheet, pillow and one blanket provided.

Backpackers 4 - One double bunk and two single beds - sheet, pillow and one blanket provided.

Backpackers 5 - Three single beds and one bunk - sheet, pillow and one blanket provided.

Backpackers 6 - Two single beds and two bunks - sheet, pillow and one blanket provided.

Directions:

From the N3 take the Underberg off ramp at Exit 99 in the Howick area. Turn towards Underberg on the R617 and travel 111kms. In Underberg village, turn right to Himeville/Sani Pass. Travel 5kms to Himeville, and a further 4kms through Himeville to the Sani Pass turnoff. The South African border post is 32kms from Himeville and travelling time is approximately 1 hour. It is 8kms from the South African border post to the Lesotho border post. The Chalet is immediately on the right as you cross into Lesotho.

From Maseru, Ox-Bow, and Katse Dam travel to Mokhotlong and take the signs to Sani Pass. The 53kms from Mokhotlong will take 1½ hours.
